Hairspray at the Outdoor Muny

Fun Seekers of Saint Louis ## **This is a free Meetup Event, and a continuation of an Experiment from last summer. We will sit in the last 9 rows which are free. Although you are advised not to bring cans or glass, or alcohol, we can picnic.** **Performance time** 8:15 p.m. nightly The idea is we meet for a picnic, listen to music, drink some wine as a group outside the Muny Theatre. I suggest we meet at the UPPER Level, and as you walk in from the parking lot, go to the LEFT of the theatre entrance and we can set up blankets, chairs and visit prior to the show. I don’t know how many would be interested, but I sat in the free seats for Frozen, Jersey Boys and Evita. Great shows. ## **The story behind the music.** Hairspray is an American musical with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, with a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on John Waters's 1988 film of the same name. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the production follows teenage Tracy Turnblad's dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, leading to social change as Tracy campaigns for the show's integration.
