Visit Berger-Keil house and Mascoutah Heritage Museum
St. Louis Historic Sites History Meetup
NEW Event
Will do again: 2030
Cost: Free, but please consider bringing two $5 bills (one for each place) as a donation.
We will be seeing 2 places for this event - both the Berger Keil house and the Mascoutah Heritage museum. We will begin at the house, then move on to the museum. If you are trying to "tour 275 before StL turns 275", this will count as 2 places.
"The **Berger-Kiel House** is a log house.... The house was built circa 1863-64 for German immigrant Jacob Berger and his family. The log house was built in a traditional manner using dovetail notching and has a hall-and-parlor layout. A wooden frame addition was placed on the house circa 1868โ72. Log houses such as this one were popular among low-income families as an inexpensive house type in wooded rural areas. The Berger-Kiel House is one of the few log houses remaining in the Mascoutah area. The house was added to the National Register of historic places in 1999." from Wikipedia
There are also outbuildings around the house we will see.
The Mascoutah Heritage Museum is a regional history museum focusing on everyday life and development in Mascoutah over time. Exhibits typically include:
* Early town artifacts, photos, and maps (including the original 1830s town plat)
* Memorabilia from local businesses and industries
* Historic clothing, advertising items, and church/community objects
* Specialized displays like a recreated schoolroom and antique printing equipment
* Natural history items such as mounted waterfowl collections
The two sites are about 3/4 of a mile apart. We will start at the museum and divide up from there.
Sorry for the late notice - I missed this one on my spreadsheet! There was a reason I had it on Sunday originally! And that's where it is now.
Mascoutah, IL is on the far southeast boundary of our boundary. The town made it into our boundary when I changed the boundary to include a 30-mile radius around Forest Park.
